Oak-Ridges Markham is one of the largest and certainly one of the most diverse federal electoral districts in southern Ontario - stretching northwards from the City of Toronto to the edge of the Holland Marsh and across the breadth of York Region. It includes the wondrous Oak Ridges Moraine, family farms, conservation areas, idyllic heritage communities and thriving urban areas with vibrant multicultural communities. But now we are challenged to do much better.

Poor government, predatory development on the moraine, destruction of agricultural land, the collapse of family farms, reckless use of declining resources, and communities with inadequate social and public services have many citizens in the riding asking what is wrong with our system of representation. We now have a government in Ottawa that has turned its back on the environment, placing our long term security at greater risk.

That is why the Green Party of Canada offers Canadians a better future. It is not a "traditional" party and it is neither right nor left - we are in front. We are fiscally responsible, ethical, socially progressive and committed to environmental sustainability throughout all aspects of life and society. And unlike traditional parties, we think long term and are dedicated to democratic reform.

During the 2006 federal election, the Green Party ran a candidate in all 308 ridings and over 650,000 Canadians shared our vision of a new, green future. This represented is a 14.4% increase in the "green" vote across Canada since the 2004 election.
